“I am glad that I am here with you.”
These words were spoken as a part of Chief Joseph's Carlisle speech of May 13, 1904 when he directly addressed the young Nez Perce students in attendance at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, Pennsylvania.
This speech was retold in full from memory by Elizabeth Wilson who, as a young Nez Perce girl, was in attendance to hear Joseph speak. It was recorded by Haruo Aoki in the 1960s and later published in his 1979 volume Nez Perce Texts.
Elizabeth Penney Wilson (1882-1972) was a renowned speaker of nuumiipuutímt, the Nez Perce language.
