Eclipse

In Nez Perce, we have the following expression (see the NPD:359)

lit.: it is diving into itself
“eclipse”
This is quite interesting for a number of reasons, one especially is where the Nez Perce version is semantically distinct from a Western view of two separate planetary bodies where "the moon blocks the sun." Rather, "diving into itself" captures the visceral experience of watching an eclipse: the sun/moon appears to plunge into its own depths, retreating into a hidden, internal dimension of the sky. As a kind of metaphoric template, it completely reimagines a mechanical, physical event through the lens of voluntary, biological movement (diving). Of course, just as compelling is that this same template is found in other Nez Perce verb/nominal forms that describe similar cosmic bodies!
