In the Nez Perce language this is a Particle form that generally describes the sound of laughing (e.g., Coyote) (see the NPD:19). Too, it is counted as onomatopoeia or as a sound symbolic expression.
But, if you wish to be specific and make it referentially certain (for whatever dialogic purposes), then you may say…

“Ha ha!”
This is to mean only a laugh made in reference to Coyote, him or herself. The entry /ʔisti/ is a kind of archiac or deeper reference to a dual living form with a contradictory life essence or quality, similar to a trickster, a form changer, or even a person of a bipolar or psychotic nature.
